Birth Plan
Mother: Cindy Corwin
Father: Jeffrey Millman
Sequoia Hospital
Labor Assitant: Angelika Nugent
This birth plan represents our goals for our labor and the birth of our child and is based on a great deal of education and thought. We understand that we cannot anticipate everything that may happen and we are prepared to be flexible about any changes that must be made for the safety of mother and baby. We ask that you inform us about the risks and benefits of any necessary procedures and allow us time to discuss them if at all possible.
Labor
- Please allow mother freedom of movement during labor, including access to a squat bar and shower.
- We would like to use the labor tub if it is available and motherıs water has not broken.
- Please do not offer pain medications. We will request them if we need them.
- Please use only intermittent external fetal monitoring after the initial strip.
- We request no routine IV. A heparin lock is acceptable as a precautionary measure or between doses of any antibiotic which may be medically necessary.
- We want to allow the amniotic membranes to break spontaneously. In any event, please do not break them without first discussing it with us.
- Please keep vaginal exams to the minimum possible.
Birth
- Mother to choose position for pushing and birth. We expect to use a squatting or side-lying position to minimize tearing.
- Use slow, natural pushing, not directed pushing.
- Please, no episiotomy unless it is necessary for the safety of the baby. Mother would prefer to tear. Use warm compresses and/or perineal massage or support to minimize tearing. Local anesthesia for any suturing.
- Please clamp the umbilical cord only after delivery of the placenta and allow the father to cut the cord. Allow the placenta to deliver naturally.
- Let the father place the baby on motherıs abdomen immediately after birth and cover with warm blankets. Suction and perform any evaluations in motherıs arms. Mother plans to breastfeed as soon as possible after birth.
Baby Care
- Baby to remain with mother or father at all times.
- Please delay antibiotic ointment for eyes and vitamin K to allow parents to bond with baby. Please give oral vitamin K.
- Baby will be breastfed. Please do not give bottles, pacifiers, or artificial nipples of any kind.
- No circumcision.
- No Hepatitis B vaccination.
- No PKU test; we will make arrangements to have the baby tested between the fourth and twelfth days of life.
Cesarian Section
- Should a Cesarian section be necessary, father and birth assistant present.
- If at all possible, please use regional anesthesia; epidural preferred.
- Please make a mirror available for mother to see babyıs birth.
- Please allow father to accompany baby for examinations. Please return baby to mother and allow her to breastfeed as soon as she is able.
