The beaches near the Bay Area have these rocks. The gray outer rock is shale that has had burrowing clams excavate holes in them. The shale then breaks apart and becomes round on the beach, leaving these holes in them. The inner stone is serpentine, the state rock of California. We call them fertility rocks for obvious reasons.
